On the 15th November 2010 the University of Makeni and St. Joseph’s School for the Hearing Impaired launched a new programme to develop a curriculum to train specialist teachers of the visually impaired. The University of Makeni currently offers training for teachers of the hearing impaired, including certificate, diploma and degree courses with in-service training held at the St. Joseph’s School for the Hearing Impaired. This programme is part of a joint effort to improve the quality of special education instruction in Sierra Leone. Support for this programme was provided by Cordaid.
