The UNIMAK Center of Excellence for Climate Change was launched at the UNIMAK auditorium on Saturday, January 13, 2024. This marks the first establishment of such a center in Sierra Leone, aiming to raise awareness on climate change nationwide.
Collaborating with various institutions, the center, initiated by Dr. Patricia Abdulai, seeks to drive positive change. The keynote speaker, Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, highlighted the importance of the center, with other speakers including UNIMAK Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Turay. Professor Turay commended Dr. Abdulai for her commendable initiative.
Dr. Yumkella views the center’s launch as a positive step for climate change in Sierra Leone, pledging collaboration for future events. Plans include organizing seminars and establishing school clubs to engage young people. Dr. Patricia emphasized the need for global energy solutions and addressing deforestation, echoing Dr. Yumkella’s call to tackle tree cutting.
