The University of Makeni Student Representative Council, in partnership with the UniMak Debating Council, recently organized an interdepartmental debate, a public speaking competition, and a poetry championship

The University of Makeni Student Representative Council, in partnership with the UniMak Debating Council, recently organized an interdepartmental debate, a public speaking competition, and a poetry championship. The theme for the competition was “Securing a Better Future for Young People through Conflict Prevention, Social Transformation, and Sustainable Development,” with a focus on Politics, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. The debating championship started on the 20th and ends on the 25th March 2023.

The finals were held between the following Departments: Mass Communications, Law, Human Resource Management, and Development Studies. The Human Resource Management Department emerged as the winner, and the runner up is Mass Communication Department. Leslie EN Jones from the Human Resource Management Department emerged as the best male orator and Esther BR Fornah from the Mass communication Department emerged as best female speaker

In conclusion, the Interdepartmental Debating Championship was a successful event, with various departments and participants showcasing their skills and knowledge on conflict prevention, social transformation, and sustainable development. The debate also lay emphasis on politics, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The event highlighted the importance of public speaking and critical thinking skills among young people and the need to invest in developing these skills for a better future.

Esther BR Forna said winning this debate as best female speaker and second best speaker overall is a dream come true.
“I had Slowly prepared for this win since year 1 , I believe it is timely and I am grateful” She said.

She said this is one of the greatest achievements received so far.
“I believe more is coming for me and the Mass Communication Department” she said.
