Bishop of Makeni Diocese Calls for Unity and Moral Renewal in 2026 New Year Message

As the global Jubilee of Hope draws to a close this January, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Makeni Bob John H Koroma delivered a powerful New Year’s Eve sermon in the Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral , urging the faithful to transition from “pilgrims of hope” into active architects of a better Sierra Leone. Reflecting on the hardships of 2025, Bishop Koroma expressed profound gratitude for divine providence, noting that while socioeconomic challenges were steep, the community was sustained by faith. He emphasized that the arrival of 2026 should not be taken for granted, calling on the congregation to “count your blessings day by day” and surrender the pains of the past year to God.
Central to the Bishop’s message was a stern call for national and social cohesion. He challenged citizens to set aside tribalism within their parishes and the wider country, describing tolerance as the essential “fruit of hope” needed to build a stable society. Addressing local concerns, he specifically linked spiritual stewardship to environmental responsibility, urging residents to take better care of their surroundings to prevent the devastating flooding that has frequently impacted the Makeni community.
The sermon also focused strongly on personal transformation and moral integrity. The Bishop encouraged a “new beginning” characterized by a commitment to non-violence within the home and a pledge to improve both spiritual and moral lives. He issued a direct appeal for self-discipline, specifically advising a reduction in alcohol consumption while pushing the youth and professionals to excel in their academic and intellectual pursuits. “A new year is a moment of growth,” he reminded the congregation, urging them to resolve to be better versions of themselves.
Closing his sermon with a prayer for divine favour, the Bishop reminded the congregants that success in 2026 is impossible without the grace of God. He encouraged everyone to seek the “blessings of the new year” through prayer and a renewed dedication to their faith. As the bells tolled for the start of 2026, the message remained clear: a better Sierra Leone begins with the individual’s commitment to change, kindness, and an unwavering trust in God’s guidance
