The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Makeni proudly hosted an engaging and impactful photojournalism workshop led by international scholar Beatriz Guerrero González-Valerio from the University of San Pablo, Madrid. The one-day intensive session, held on Tuesday, 24th February 2026, marked her third academic collaboration with UniMak, reinforcing a growing partnership focused on global knowledge exchange.
Welcoming the distinguished guest, Lecturer Matthew Abdul Kanu highlighted the department’s continued commitment to international engagement. He noted that exposure to global professionals plays a crucial role in narrowing the gap between classroom theory and industry practice, particularly in fields such as journalism and digital media.
The workshop was designed specifically for Year Two Mass Communication students and centered on practical photojournalism techniques. Professor Beatriz guided students through essential areas including visual storytelling, framing, composition, ethical considerations in documentary photography, and the evolving role of multimedia in modern journalism. The session combined theory with hands-on demonstrations, enabling students to immediately apply what they learned.
Students actively participated in discussions and practical exercises, gaining valuable insights from Professor Beatriz’s international experience. Many described the workshop as inspiring and transformative, expressing renewed confidence in their career aspirations within the media and communications industry.
The visit further underscores UniMak’s dedication to academic excellence and global collaboration.
