UniMak hosts Sierra Leone National Education Week

The Sierra Leone National Education Week, hosted by the University of Makeni (UNIMAK), was an important landmark gathering that brought together workers from the education sector in the country with a key focus on AI in the education sector in Sierra Leone.


The 5-day event was held from January 20 to January 24, 2025. The opening ceremony brought together stakeholders in the education sector, including the Vice Chancellor of UNIMAK, Professor Joseph Turay, Professor Turay said the University of Makeni is committed to prioritizing AI and contributing to the human resource development of Sierra Leone through AI.


Participants participated in the official opening on January 20, with many presentations and discussions aimed at presenting several educational strategic plans and opportunities within the country.
The program took place in the UNIMAK auditorium, spearheading an active platform for stakeholder interactions that promotes meaningful engagement and dialogue that highlighted the challenges and progress in Sierra Leone’s education sector.


The closing ceremony on January 24 presented a speech from the president of Sierra Leone, Retired Brigadier General Julius Maada Bio, who highlighted the significance of investing in human capital development within the free quality education framework
The president’s speech highlighted the government’s commitment to increasing the quality of education and making sure that there are available opportunities for all citizens across the country.
The UNIMAK Centre for Innovation Director Kisimi Kayleemasa Kamara said the education week focuses on AI and its significance to technology and innovators with the power to turn the impossible into reality. “It all began with a remarkable presentation on AI and Education, delivered by the Director of the Centre for Innovation during the week-long celebration”. He said the impact of this session set the stage for an unforgettable moment.

“With this, Unimak has undoubtedly emerged as the frontrunner in AI and Education. Offering our venue for Education Week and showcasing our leadership in this field, we have demonstrated beyond doubt that we are the true champions of AI and Education,” he said.
The week-long program marks the commemoration of educational achievements but also an opportunity for participants to network and form partnerships that aimed at spearing educational progress in Sierra Leone.
