UNIMAK MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS

The UNIMAK Mentorship Program was organized by the “Gender and Career Counselling – Resources Centre (GENECC), and the “Office of the Dean of Students”. The event was held on the 30th of January 2025
Director of the Centre Mary Hawa Turay thanks CEU for supporting the event.
The Management of the University of Makeni (UNIMAK), a Catholic higher educational institution, has identified the need for the Catholic lay faithful to be involved in shaping the moral and social lifestyle of our young students by offering voluntary mentoring support for good moral standards
This idea was born out of observation over the years that some of our young students have moved away from parental control for the first time to face life’s challenges. Some have been influenced wrongly by their peers and other groups into questionable adult life in the fight for emancipation from parental care.
As a Catholic institution, we have an obligation to develop the human person in academic excellence, moral, and social behavior.

OBJECTIVE
The primary objective is for our lay faithful to:

  • mentor the students as they navigate academic and social life. This could be done by assigning students on a one-on-one basis to each mentor, who will be expected to
  • provide support by giving guidance to the vulnerable student.
  • Assist the student in generating communication to achieve academic, social, and career development.
  • Inculcate good moral behavior in line with the Catholic faith.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MENTORS:
  • Support for personal growth: Each mentor will be assigned several first-year students to guide and mentor
  • Communicate with the students to identify their challenges in the University
  • Dialogue with the students on their choice of career and program of study
  • Encourage them to talk about their relationship with Lecturers on challenging issues
  • Support the students in their spiritual and moral development as they navigate the complexities of faith in a university setting ( We are in no way discriminating against other religions)
  • Report to the University if any mental or other serious issues are detected for professional action.
  • Maintain confidentiality in dealing with the students
  • Should be available to students, especially on appointment dates
  • Be willing to attend meetings and training programs as and when necessary
  • All mentors are expected to get some understanding of the child and vulnerable adult protection document (the one that UNIMAK operates with).

DURATION:
The mentorship relationship is expected to last one academic year, with the possibility of extending based on the agreement between the Unimak Team and the mentor.

EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK:
The Unimak team will meet with the mentors periodically to assess the effectiveness of the mentorship based on the feedback from the students
SUPPORT AND RESOURCES:
TThe university will provide training and orientation for the mentors.
(Please note that this is a voluntary service to our catholic institution).
By participating in the Unimak mentorship training program for our future leaders, you are playing a crucial role in shaping the future of not only the leaders of tomorrow but also society as a whole.
