Yoni Campus, September 25, 2026

The University of Makeni (UNIMAK) held its annual retreat at the Yoni Campus on Friday, September 25, 2026, bringing together university leadership, academic staff, and other members of the university community to reflect on the institution’s growth, achievements, challenges, and future direction.

The retreat was held under the theme “Building a Civilization of Love: From Growth, Consolidation, and Resilience.” The theme provided a platform for reflection on the University’s development while emphasizing the importance of unity, resilience, optimism, academic excellence, and a shared commitment to the continued growth of UNIMAK.

Chancellor Calls for Unity, Resilience and Commitment

Addressing the university community, the Chancellor of the University of Makeni, His Excellency Bob John Hassan Koroma, called on staff and leadership to cultivate resilience, remain optimistic and committed, and work together to strengthen the University.

The Chancellor highlighted UNIMAK’s progress in several areas, including student enrollment, infrastructure development, and international partnerships spanning all continents. He also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to moral integrity, quality education, and meaningful community impact.

He encouraged members of staff to take ownership of the institution and contribute actively to its continued growth and development.

Quality Assurance at the Heart of University Development

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Turay, emphasized the importance of quality assurance in sustaining the progress and credibility of every university.

He noted that since its establishment in 2005, UNIMAK has continued to prioritize quality assurance as an essential component of its academic development and institutional growth.

Reflecting on the theme of the retreat, Professor Turay also referenced a report from the Conference of Vice Chancellors and Principals, which, according to his remarks, placed the University of Makeni among the top five institutions in Sierra Leone.

He encouraged lecturers and academic leaders to reflect deeply on the Chancellor’s message and translate the retreat’s theme into practical action within their respective departments and faculties.

A Call for Proactive Leadership and Engagement

Professor Turay urged lecturers to be proactive rather than reactive in addressing issues within their departments and faculties. He encouraged greater attention to research, community engagement, academic performance, and institutional sustainability.

He further emphasized the responsible use of university resources and called on staff to contribute to building a sustainable institution capable of maintaining its progress while preparing for future growth.

The Vice Chancellor’s message reinforced the importance of collective responsibility, academic excellence, and continuous improvement as UNIMAK advances its mission.

Continuing a Tradition of Reflection and Renewal

The annual retreat remains an important tradition at the University of Makeni, having been conducted since the institution’s inception in 2005. It provides an opportunity for university leadership and staff to evaluate progress, identify areas requiring improvement, and establish priorities for the future.

The 2026 retreat served as a renewed call for the university community to work together in the spirit of love, unity, resilience, responsibility, and excellence as UNIMAK continues to expand its academic and community impact across Sierra Leone and beyond.
