The University of Makeni (UNIMAK) is proud to be a core partner in the European Union-funded project titled “Enhancing Capacities for Sustainable Community Engagement: Cases of Georgia and Sierra Leone” (ENHANCE-GSL). This innovative project brings together higher education institutions and civil society organizations from Sierra Leone, Georgia, and Europe, with the goal of redefining the role of universities in society through proactive community engagement. The project was launched as a collaborative effort under the leadership of the University of Georgia and includes partners from Slovenia, Slovakia, and Croatia.
The project recognizes that universities have a vital role not only in delivering academic knowledge but also in addressing pressing societal needs. Community engagement, therefore, becomes a strategic pillar in higher education. ENHANCE-GSL focuses on building the institutional capacity of universities in Georgia and Sierra Leone to strengthen their bond with society by equipping them with the skills, resources, and structural units necessary to support long-term, reciprocal engagement with communities.
At the local level, UNIMAK and its fellow institutional partners will benefit from hands-on training, the establishment of dedicated community engagement units, and the development of localized strategies. Staff and students will be trained in participatory methods that foster trust, inclusion, and mutual growth between academic institutions and surrounding communities. These units will also be responsible for conducting further workshops and trainings, ensuring the continuity and sustainability of the project’s outcomes beyond its initial funding period.
Nationally, the project aims to influence a wider range of stakeholders within the higher education landscape. Universities beyond the direct partner institutions in Sierra Leone and Georgia will be invited to participate in conferences and events organized as part of ENHANCE-GSL. These events will serve to introduce the concept of institutionalized community engagement and showcase replicable models of success. Moreover, national collaboration will be deepened as institutions draw on the expertise and experience of their European counterparts.
At the regional level, the project’s results — including a comprehensive community engagement manual and operational units — will serve as benchmarks for similar institutions in neighboring countries. The project will thus extend its impact across West Africa and the Eastern neighborhood, promoting a culture of cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and social responsibility in higher education institutions.
The project’s impacts are multi-layered — influencing individuals, institutions, and systems. At the individual level, participating academic and administrative staff, along with students, will benefit from enhanced professional development, including skills in leadership, communication, cultural competence, and problem-solving. These individuals will also expand their professional networks through direct engagement with community organizations, positioning themselves as catalysts for societal transformation.
Institutionally, the project fosters innovation and structural change. UNIMAK, for instance, will experience improved infrastructure for community engagement and an organizational culture that is better aligned with community priorities. The creation and institutionalization of engagement units within the university will allow for a more responsive and adaptable approach to emerging social challenges.
Systemically, ENHANCE-GSL contributes to a broader cultural shift — influencing perceptions, attitudes, and policies towards university-society relations. By embedding community engagement into the core mission of universities, the project helps reposition these institutions as central actors in national and regional development. This reorientation lays a foundation for systemic and sustainable social change.
UNIMAK’s participation in ENHANCE-GSL reinforces its ongoing commitment to the welfare of its students, faculty, and surrounding communities. The initiative aligns seamlessly with the university’s vision to be a transformative force in Sierra Leone, cultivating leaders and institutions that are equipped to drive inclusive progress. It also provides a platform to learn from global best practices while sharing local insights that can enrich international approaches to engagement.
As the project unfolds, the University of Makeni invites students, faculty, community partners, and policymakers to actively participate and support the implementation of this pioneering initiative. The impact of ENHANCE-GSL will not only be measured in reports or manuals but in the everyday lives it improves and the institutions it strengthens. Together, we are shaping a new era for higher education — one that is deeply rooted in community, guided by compassion, and driven by shared growth.
