In a strategic effort to connect academic learning with practical governance, the Social Work Department of the University of Makeni (UniMak) recently undertook a high-level engagement with the Makeni City Council. The visit centered on discussions with the Council’s Development Planning Officer, focusing on disaster preparedness, urban risk management, and community resilience within Makeni Municipality.
The engagement provided students and faculty with a valuable opportunity to observe how core theoretical frameworks—such as vulnerability assessments, risk reduction strategies, and the disaster management cycle—are applied within local government structures. Through detailed briefings and interactive dialogue, participants gained deeper insight into how municipal authorities identify at-risk communities, coordinate emergency response mechanisms, and integrate disaster mitigation strategies into development planning.
Faculty members emphasized that such experiential learning opportunities are essential to strengthening professional competence. By examining the logistical, administrative, and social complexities involved in municipal disaster planning, students were able to critically assess how classroom theories translate into policy formulation and community-based interventions.
The visit also highlighted the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in protecting vulnerable populations, particularly in the context of Sierra Leone’s evolving environmental and urban challenges. Discussions underscored how local governance institutions play a pivotal role in safeguarding communities against floods, fires, and other climate-related hazards.
Students described the engagement as eye-opening and transformative, noting that it deepened their understanding of practical social work within governance systems. The Social Work Department reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with local institutions to ensure that graduates are not only theoretically grounded but also professionally prepared to address real-world social and environmental challenges.
