The University of Makeni witnessed an exciting climax to its week-long photojournalism training as students participated in a high-stakes photography competition on Thursday, February 26, 2026. The event was presided over by internationally renowned scholar Beatriz Guerrero González-Valerio of the University of San Pablo, Madrid, Spain.
The competition marked the practical finale of an intensive workshop conducted earlier in the week for Year Two Mass Communication students. Designed to test both technical competence and ethical storytelling, the contest challenged participants to translate theoretical concepts into powerful visual narratives that reflect real-world journalistic standards.
Students demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and a firm grasp of professional photography techniques, including composition, lighting, framing, and contextual storytelling. Their submissions highlighted not only technical growth but also an emerging confidence in using photography as a tool for social documentation and public communication.
In her remarks, Professor Guerrero González-Valerio commended the students for their remarkable progress within a short period. She noted that their ability to synthesize complex instruction into professional-grade imagery speaks volumes about the talent and potential within UniMak’s communications program. She further encouraged the students to continue refining their craft and upholding ethical standards in visual journalism.
Participants expressed heartfelt appreciation to Professor Beatriz and her team from the University of San Pablo for their mentorship and commitment to strengthening practical media education. The successful conclusion of the workshop and competition underscores UniMak’s dedication to providing globally informed, hands-on training that prepares students for dynamic careers in journalism and media practice.
